So i'm finally assembling my Proforge 2S. It's finally built and most thinfgs so far are ok but I am at the testing stage and having issues with Z axis. When I move the the gantry via the touchscreen it just goes down with both button presses and it rattles a lot. It seems like the up button is actually moving it downwards better while down just moves it slightly and/or gets stuck. The rattling sounds like drilling a wall. I thought some screws are lose but i rechecked everything and all seems fine. I also checked the jumpers and steppers. Jumpers are all in and if i understand correctly both TMC2100 steppers have to be set identical (unlike A4988).
Please help someone :(
Ok, I found the issue. I tried to re-wire everything and found that the connection at one of the motors was just slightly pulled out/not fully pushed in. Replugging it fixed the issue.
Looking at the photos everything seems to be installed correctly.
If swapping the stepper drivers made no difference then there may be an issue with the cables.
On the Z-axis you have two motor cable plus an adaptor.
Take a look at the cables and the adaptor, are they connected correctly at all connection points, including at the motors themselves? Check that the colour order of the wires matches with the order of the other motor cables.
Yes, I can move it. I think it was too tight before but i loosened everything and then tightened it up again to make sure that nothing is too tight to prevent movement. That did help with the rattling and the movement.
It can’t be the case because Z+ and Z- moves the whole gantry down. There is no difference between the presses, and doesn’t look like it would be struggling to move one way but not the other.
I tried swapping A4988's around but that had no effect at all.
I am not too skilled/experienced in electronics (besides building PC's) nor am I a native speaker so might not have understood the guides correctly but I think the issue is in the steppers. Can you take a look at how I have it set up/assembled and see if I have done something incorrectly please?
Can you manually turn the couplings to move the z-axis up and down with little resistance? If there's a lot of resistance then the anti-backlash nuts may be too tight, you can adjust this with the single bolt on the nut.
Another thing would be not enough current going to the motors, power off the machine and turn the trimpot on the stepper driver clock-wise 1/8th of a turn to increase the current, power back on and try again.
The kit should also include a spare A4988 driver, in case the one plugged in is broken.
